Barbara
Granoff is the founder of ABC
me Sign™, co-creator of the award-winning
"Sign-A-Lot" DVD series for hearing children, and
the mother of a signing child. Barbara holds a Masters Degree
in Social Work and a Bachelors Degree in Special Education,
specializing in Deaf Education. She has taught hearing impaired
children in the United States and overseas as well as lecturing
nationally. Currently, Barbara is adjunct faculty at Orange
Coast College where she teaches "Signing for Young Children"
through the Department of Early Childhood Education.
Over the past few
years Barbara has brought the concept of signing with hearing
children to countless communities. She was recently awarded
the 2005 Woman of Vision award.
Jill
Fales has a Masters Degree in Special Education, specializing
in the deaf and hard of hearing, and a Bachelors Degree in
Human Development. Her education and teaching experience have
given her a solid understanding of language acquisition and
the developmental stages of babies and young children. Jill
is able to accommodate multiple learning styles and believes
that learning should be hands-on and fun! She is proficient
in ASL and signs with her three young children (ages 6, 3,
and 1).
Jill is enthusiastic
about sharing the benefits of signing with hearing infants
and young children. She teaches Babies and Toddlers Sing and
Play Circle Time classes.
Jennifer Buckman
has a Masters Degree in Deaf Education from USC and her Clear
Professional Credential from the State of California and has been
signing for over 11 years. Jennifer has signed with both of her young
children since infancy and her daughter at 2 years of age, had over a
200 sign vocabulary. Jennifer looks forward to sharing her experiences
and knowledge with the parents in her classes. She is thrilled to be
able to assist you and your family to experience the gift ASL has to
offer.. This is a gift that will stay with you and your baby for a life
time!
Jennifer teaches our Growing Together classes as well as our Circle Time
classes. She believes that teaching and learning should be fun! Her
classes are conducted in a playful and language-rich environment—with
games, songs, finger plays, and books.
Christy Walters
has a Bachelor Degree in English and a Certificate in Interpreting for
the Deaf. She works as a freelance interpreter for the deaf community,
and signs story time at the Huntington Beach Central Library. Christy
started and organizes a parents' group for people who use sign language
with their children. This group includes both hearing and deaf parents
and children. She has witnessed the benefits of teaching ASL to
children through her group as well as to her own children. Both of her
boys have been signing since they were nine months old. She is excited
to be able to help other parents enjoy the benefits that signing has to
offer.
Penny
Flaherty holds an M.S.Ed. in Deaf Education, Speech Pathology,
and Audiology. She has taught preschool and elementary aged
hearing-impaired students for ten years and tutored infants
through high school age children in private practive for eight
years. Penny has taught sign language classes to children
and adults as well as supervised mainstreamed hearing-impaired
students and their interpreters. She began signing with her
son at birth and he was able to communicate his needs through
signs at eight months of age.
